Introducing the CJI Series Butterfly, a brand-new addition to our range and crafted from the highly distinctive Butterfly Staining English Willow. While butterfly-stained clefts may not have the traditional white-grain appearance, they hold a legendary reputation among experienced batmakers and players for their exceptional performance. In fact, many professionals specifically choose butterfly-stained bats for their remarkable power and responsiveness.
Butterfly staining forms naturally within the tree. As beautifully described in Hugh Barty-King’s classic work “Quilt Winders and Pod Shavers: The History of Cricket Bat and Ball Manufacture”, the markings appear when cracks form as the tree sways in the wind, drawing tannins from the bark. Over the years, the sap rises and falls, spreading the colour through successive growth rings to create patterns resembling the wings of a butterfly—hence the name.
These clefts are celebrated for their durability, strength, and the superb “ping” that butterfly willow can produce.
